If lab-grown meat Isn’t vegan then what’s the point?

brad_mt Mar 27

Okay, I've got a legit question I can't stop thinking about. What exactly is lab-grown meat and why are we producing it if it's not even vegan or plant-based?

From what I understand, it's real animal meat, but grown from cells in a lab instead of coming from an actual animal. So it's not fake meat like Beyond or Impossible, but it's also not cruelty-free in the strictest sense (since it still starts from animal cells, right?).

So then what’s the goal? Less animal suffering? Environmental reasons?

Is it at least considered "ethical meat" or a better choice?

Lab-grown meat is a bit of a gray area, which is why it gets people talking.

You’ve got it right. It’s real meat, just grown from animal cells instead of coming from a whole animal. It’s not vegan since it still starts with animal cells (and sometimes uses animal-based growth mediums), but it’s not trying to be a plant-based alternative like Beyond or Impossible. The main goal is to cut down on factory farming, lower the environmental impact, and reduce animal suffering.

Compared to regular meat, cultivated meat uses way less land and water, slashes greenhouse gas emissions, and doesn’t involve raising and slaughtering animals—so a lot of people see it as a step toward “ethical meat.”

If someone’s vegan for ethical reasons, it might not be for them. But for people who want a more humane, sustainable way to eat real meat, it’s a pretty exciting option.
