🛠 Tech Explained

Break down complex gadget features and technologies in a way that’s easy to understand.

My iPhone can track ovulation and detect car crashes, but not my temperature? Why not?

Was sick last week and had this random thought.... why can’t my iPhone take my temperature?

It already knows my heart rate (via Apple Watch), tracks sleep, logs menstrual cycles, and can even tell if I’ve been in a car crash. But if I wanna check for a fever? Still gotta use an old-school thermometer like it’s 1993.

I know the Apple Watch Series 8+ tracks skin temperature overnight, but that’s not helpful when you’re sitting there feeling like death and just want a quick check. And the iPhone? Nothing.

Is this a hardware limitation? Some weird liability thing? Or is Apple just holding onto it as a “revolutionary” feature for a future launch after Samsung does it first?

Anyone else think this is a strange miss for a device that’s obsessed with health data? Or is there a legit reason I’m missing?

I've wondered about that, too! Here we are, nearly 2 years after the official end of the pandemic, and the market is flush with wearables that can take your body temperature, but the latest iPhone still can't. I guess that it's a combination of the reasons you mentioned. It could be a hardware limitation. The iPhone would need a special sensor to take your temperature, and maybe Apple hasn't developed one that can easily mesh into the phone's hardware. If Apple is working on such a capability, then yes, you can bet it will be launched as a "revolutionary" feature 🙂

Honestly, the heart rate thing put me off when I was pregnant. It was giving weird data in spite of me updating the app all the time so if you ask me, health tracking has a long way to go. Steps and data around that is fine but remember the temperature monitors during covid days? They were so inaccurate that I had a fun time knowing I had temperature when I actually didn't. 🤣 So, not expecting anything on this sooner but yes, if they do release, it better give the correct stats.
